Our Message

Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world and home to over 5 million orphans. War and AIDS have resulted in the loss of a generation. That generation's offspring are growing up in orphanages and on the streets. With little to no education, this sea of orphans will have little chance of reaching their full potential. These smiling young faces hide the despair and hopelessness in their hearts. Yet, their dreams still burn deep inside their spirit.

Eskedar, an 18 year old beautiful young lady, graduated top of her class, yet due to lack of resources, will be unable to attend College. She dreams of being a Sociologist and becoming a real asset to her community.

Many of the young adults have cared for and watched their parents die of HIV/AIDS. They want to be doctors. They have seen what HIV/AIDS can do to a person's body. They want to find cures.

One young man wants to be an Engineer. Poverty will be the door slammed in his face. Poverty will be his reality if he does not receive an education.

These orphans are hungry for a higher education. They study hard and make high marks in school. They know it is their only way to break the grip of Poverty.

Hanna's Orphan Home in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is home to 180+ children. The numbers change every day. More orphans need shelter and food in their stomachs. Each day is a challenge for the young adults at Hanna's, they must face a very uncertain future.

When forced to leave the orphanage, because they are no longer in school, due to lack of finacial resources, these young adults have few options. For the girls, they may be able to get work as a domestic, cleaning house, washing clothes and cooking, but many times become the mistress of the man of the house. They may be able to secure a job cleaning motel rooms, but these jobs are very few. Many of the young orphan girls become prostitutes and eventually contract HIV/AIDS themselves. With little to no education their options are few. For the young men, the best they can expect is manual labor or the military. These young people have great minds and great potential. They need opportunity. That is what "Higher Education 4 Ethiopia's Orphans" is offering to them. The opportunity to reach their dreams, to succeed in life, to give them the tools to be an asset to their community and their country.
